The Case of the $2 Leads.

From call ads to WhatsApp, one mistake, and the cheapest leads that turned out to be the worst.

The Call

The client had spent around $250 on ads and said it “won't budge”. I proposed my own creative and ran a trial.

The Trial

A five-card carousel: custom blinds, homes and offices, done right, free measurement, call now. On 23 January the call ads brought 12 calls at $16.65 each, too expensive for the client.

The Switch

In February I moved the account to WhatsApp: 20 chats at about $13 each. The client visited 4–5 homes, but said 30–40% of chats were spam.

My Mistake

In March I launched three new videos at once and spent $112 for 3 chats. Testing one creative at a time would have told me which one failed. I relaunched the carousel on its own: 30 chats on $413.

The $2 Leads

One ad brought 41 chats at $2.32, the cheapest of all, and the worst. Meta's automatic creative enhancements had built it around an image of a woman at a window, and people read it as something other than a blinds ad. The chats were cheap because they were the wrong people.

The Verdict

173inquiries: 161 WhatsApp chats and 12 calls
$11.77per inquiry, on $2,036
62chats in April from the carousel, at $14.01
Lesson: what people see in the ad decides who replies. The cheapest lead is only cheap if it's the right person.
